Projection & the Anima
Jung's concept that men fall in love with an idealized internal image of the feminine, not the real woman in front of them.
What is Projection & the Anima?
Before a man becomes whole, he doesn't fall in love with a woman, he falls in love with his anima, an idealized internal image of femininity shaped by his mother, childhood and cultural conditioning. He's not seeing her, he's seeing his own unconscious projection.
This is why women often mirror the fantasy at first, because they instinctively sense what a man wants and, historically, submitting to that fantasy was a survival strategy. But once the mask comes down, usually around the three-month limerence mark, both people reveal who they actually are, and the projection can no longer be sustained.
This is why heartbreak is the collapse of the fantasy, not the loss of her. It's also why men repeat toxic patterns with different women, it's not the woman, it's an unresolved loop of the psyche trying to fix an original wound, often tied to the mother, replaying with a new face and a new name.
